چکیده
Biomass burning is a key type of the Earth's land cover conversion. It destroys vegetation ecosystems, releases land surface carbon stocks to the atmosphere and alters biosphere-atmosphere interactions at regional and global scales. Accurate accounting of burned areas is critical for global carbon cycle modeling. It has unique value for timely management of natural resources. NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) provides required set of remote sensing measurements at the daily basis to allow nearly real time burned area monitoring at global scale. This study utilizes atmospherically corrected surface reflectances at 500-m spatial resolution recorded by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board of the ESE Terra platform for burning area detection on the basis of the artificial intelligence approach. The artificial neural network systems, ARTMAP and Self-Organizing Map (SOM), were used for supervised and unsupervised extraction of burn features in the Earth's land cover. Training of ARTMAP system was conducted with MODIS land cover and fire products. Case studies include burn identification over Western regions of the US and Africa continent. We employ rough sets theory to provide a quantitative description of the accuracy of the feature detection system. This

Towards a Standardization in the Use of Physiological Signals for Affective Recognition
The implementation of physiological signals, as an approach for emotion recognition in computer systems, is not a straight forward task. This paper discusses five main areas that lack of standards and guided principles, which have led Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers to take critical decisions about (i) models, (ii) stimulus, (iii) measures, (iv) features and (v) algorithms with som...

sensor independent features. Different physical quantities can provide the same abstract information about an activity. Thus, for example, on-body inertial sensors, clothing-integrated textile elongation sensors, and visual tracking, all give information about body parts trajectories. If the classifiers are trained on such trajectories rather than on raw sensor signals, then the classification ...
متن کاملGains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach
By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...
متن کاملImproved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.
BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...
متن کاملSteady electrodiffusion in hydrogel-colloid composites: macroscale properties from microscale electrokinetics.
A rigorous microscale electrokinetic model for hydrogel-colloid composites is adopted to compute macroscale profiles of electrolyte concentration, electrostatic potential, and hydrostatic pressure across membranes that separate electrolytes with different concentrations. The membranes are uncharged polymeric hydrogels in which charged spherical colloidal particles are immobilized and randomly d...
